A 16-year-old and the person who shot him to death on Wednesday evening were perhaps gambling outside a south Fort Worth apartment at the time of the killing, police said.

The victim, identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as Kearon Taylor, was slain about 7:30 p.m. May 21 at the Park at Sycamore apartments, in the 3800 block of Great Basin Lane, Fort Worth police said.

Taylor moved inside an apartment after he was shot and died there. He suffered gunshot wounds to his torso, police said.

The suspect, who used a handgun in the killing, walked or ran from the scene, police said. Police on Thursday said they had not taken the suspect into custody.

Homicide detectives are investigating the case.

“Kearon Deon Taylor was a vibrant 16-year-old with a beautiful smile and a respectful nature,” a family member wrote on a GoFundMe page to raise money for his funeral. Taylor was killed in a shooting May 21 in Fort Worth.

A member of Taylor’s family organized a GoFundMe account to raise money for his funeral.

“Kearon Deon Taylor was a vibrant 16-year-old with a beautiful smile and a respectful nature,” a relative wrote on the fundraising website. “He loved playing football and spending time with his mother, siblings, and friends.”
