A state district court jury last week found a 43-year-old man guilty of murder in a June 2023 killing at a south Fort Worth motel.

Joe Lozano shot to death Lorenzo Sexton, 54, the jury in the trial in the 432nd District Court in Tarrant County found. The panel on Friday assessed an 80-year prison term.

Lozano killed Sexton near a swimming pool at the Days Inn at 4213 South Freeway. Sexton was shot in the upper body and died on the pool deck, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Filings in the case suggest the defense argued the killing, which was investigated by the Fort Worth Police Department, was justified by self-defense.

Lozano is a documented member of the Varrio Centro and Puro Tango Blast street gangs, according to the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office.

Assistant District Attorneys Sarah Sherman and Madeline Jones prosecuted the case. Defense attorneys Sheena Winkfield and Tiffany Burks were appointed to represent Lozano.
