Suspect arrested in shooting of singer at Dallas’ Black Academy of Arts and Letters
Dallas police have arrested a suspect accused of shooting a singer Saturday night at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, according to WFAA-TV.
The singer, identified as Jada Thomas, was signing autographs after a performance when she was shot by a woman in the crowd, police said.
Thomas was transported to a hospital, where she was in stable condition, according to WFAA.
The suspect, who police identified as 26-year old Micah Williams, was arrested in the lobby of a nearby hotel on South Akard Street in downtown Dallas, according to KXAS-TV.
“It was a packed house, people were in line getting autographs and we heard this shot,” the academy’s founder, Curtis King, told KXAS. “It was unreal. It was like everything was in slow motion.”
The academy is working on strengthening its security procedures and screening processes, according to a post on King’s social media.
“My girl she’s strong. She’s resilient. She’s a fighter,” King told KXAS. “She will sing and soar, and she’ll be even better when she gets back on her feet.”
Williams faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is being held on a $200,000 bond in the Dallas County Jail.
Witnesses told police that Williams’ behavior was “really robotic and off” before the shooting, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. In an interview with police, Williams admitted to shooting Thomas, who she claimed was harassing her, the affidavit states.
