Family mourns death of 23-year-old from injuries received in Fort Worth shooting
A North Texas family is grieving the loss of a 23-year-old Everman man who recently died from complications of injuries he received in an Oct. 3 shooting.
De’Kiah Montgomery died at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth on Oct. 13, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death has been ruled a homicide.
Montgomery’s family organized a GoFundMe to help cover the 23-year-old’s medical and funeral expenses. Loved ones described him as “a big teddy bear” who was fiercely protective of his family, including his twin nieces.
Montgomery was one of two people who were shot while leaving a party in Fort Worth the night of Oct. 3, according to police.
Police said the victims left the scene in a vehicle and after driving a short distance were involved in a crash near U.S. 287 and Mitchell Boulevard.
Twenty-nine-year-old Kinte Johnson of Fort Worth was shot in the torso and died in the vehicle in the 3100 block of Wesleyan Drive South, officials said. The second victim, Montgomery, was taken by private vehicle to a hospital.
Homicide detectives have been investigating the shooting. No arrests have been announced, and Fort Worth police said on Friday, Oct. 25, that there was nothing new to report on the case.
