Driver arrested after Fort Worth car crash that killed a Dallas police crime analyst
A 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a southwest Fort Worth car crash that killed a 34-year-old crime analyst in September, according to court records.
Apurva Mehta was booked into the Fort Worth City Jail on Oct. 7. He faces a manslaughter charge and is accused of driving recklessly by speeding or failing to observe and avoid another vehicle, Tarrant County court records show.
On Sept. 6, officers responded to the 5200 block of Bryant Irvin Road for a major two-vehicle accident. One of the drivers died at the scene, according to police.
The victim, Carmen Michelle Fletcher, was a crime scene analyst for the Dallas Police Department. She had worked in that position for nearly 10 years, according to her online obituary.
“Her laser focus in collecting evidence assisted in solving many crimes,” the obituary says.
Fletcher, also known as Carmen Gonzalez, is remembered for her unique sense of humor, laugh and beautiful smile, the obituary states. Her top priority was spending time with family and friends.
Mehta bonded out of jail shortly after his arrest. He was injured in the accident, according to Fort Worth police.
Mehta’s attorney Greg Westfall called the accident a tragedy, but said his client was not at fault.
“We expect this case will be dismissed,” Westfall told the Star-Telegram in an email. “And if not, we expect to prevail in front of a Tarrant County jury.”
