A 17-year-old girl fired a shotgun at her relatives and officers at a North Texas apartment on Tuesday, police said. A 55-year-old woman was wounded.

From the top of a stairwell at a Kennedale apartment, a 17-year-old girl late Tuesday fired a shotgun upon her relatives and officers, police said.

Jazlyn Renfro was distraught and in a call to authorities about 11:45 p.m. threatened a shooting at a unit at Alta Landing Apartments, Kennedale police said.

Officers saw a 55-year-old woman and a 2-year-old boy on the balcony and could hear a disturbance inside of the apartment in the 3100 block of Joplin Road, Kennedale police said.

Jazlyn Renfro shot the 55-year-old woman as the victim was trying to walk down a flight of stairs to leave the apartment, police said.

The front door to the apartment swung open. An officer saw the victim slumped on the floor with a gunshot wound to her back. She was holding the boy. The woman was taken to a hospital and early Wednesday was stable.

As officers tried to pull the child and the victim to safety, the suspect fired shots, police said.

Officers returned fire. Jazlyn Renfro was not shot, but stopped firing upon the officers and the victim, police said.

As the victim and the child were pulled to safety, the door closed and officers retreated and took cover. Jazlyn Renfro left the apartment with her hands raised.

Jazlyn Renfro was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted capital murder, two counts of aggravated assault on a family member with a weapon and three counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer with a weapon.

“Without the officers’ swift and courageous actions, we may have had additional gunshot victims or a homicide. These officers truly acted heroically,” Police Chief Mike Holguin wrote in a statement.

Police did not release the precise relationships among the suspect, shooting victim and child.
