A motorist whom police said they tried to stop on Sunday in Bedford because they alleged she was speeding on a highway refused for several hours to leave the car as officers attempted to negotiate.

Bedford police tried about 11:45 a.m. to stop the driver in the express lanes of Texas 183.

The driver did not initially stop and called a dispatcher to let the police department know she had a gun in the car, according to Bedford police. The driver ultimately pulled over.

The driver, who was alone, declined to leave the car for several hours as officers attempted to negotiate with her, according to Bedford police.

A SWAT team deployed gas into the car. The driver left and surrendered to officers.

Bedford police identified the woman as 34-year-old Shalunda Hayes, of Fort Worth.

Hayes was taken to a hospital and booked into the Tarrant County Jail after she was medically cleared.

Police said she faces charges of evading arrest with a vehicle, impersonating a public servant, resisting arrest, and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Her bond had not been set Monday.
