A former North Texas fire chief has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison after pleading guilty last year to theft and misuse of funds, officials said.

Troy Mac Hohenberger will also be required to pay over $500,000 in restitution to Denton County Emergency Services District 1, the agency said in a news release Thursday.

FBI agents arrested Hohenberger in November 2022 on allegations that he had stolen money designated for the Denton County ESD 1 pension fund during the time he was chief.

Hohenberger pleaded guilty to 13 federal charges in May 2023. According to the indictment, the former chief failed to put funds into the pension plan in the time frame required by federal law. He also made false statements about the pension funds on forms submitted to the Department of Labor.

“Since January 2023, the Denton County ESD No. 1 Board of Commissioners, new Fire Chief, and Administrative Staff have worked diligently to make the firefighters whole and to ensure accountability, sustainability, and transparency for future,” the release said.

On Thursday, Hohenberger was sentenced to 50 months in federal prison to be followed by three years of supervised release.
