Armed man shot by Fort Worth officers when he carjacked driver after chase, police say
Fort Worth officers shot and injured an armed man accused of carjacking a driver following a chase Thursday evening on the city’s north side, police said.
The shooting happened near the intersection of NW 28th Street and McKinley Avenue.
No civilians or officers were injured, Police Chief Neil Noakes said during a news conference at the scene. The suspect was stabilized and taken to a hospital.
Police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Trevor Davila, who remains hospitalized. He faces charges of aggravated robbery, evading arrest and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
The pursuit began about 5 p.m. near the intersection of Hazel Drive and Long Avenue when officers were notified by Flock license-plate surveillance cameras about a stolen vehicle, police said. The officers attempted to stop the vehicle — a maroon GMC Sierra — but the suspect continued, drove recklessly, and rammed into a police vehicle, according to a police spokesperson.
The driver in the stolen pickup truck circled the neighborhood several times before officers deployed spikes to stop it near 28th and McKinley.
After the vehicle stopped about 5:40 p.m., Davila got out, carrying a long gun and carjacked an SUV while pointing the weapon at the driver, police said. Multiple officers fired at him when he ignored commands to drop the weapon, police said.
Davila got out of the SUV and pointed his gun in the direction of a business, and officers fired at him again before he complied with their orders and was taken into custody, police said.
Officers immediately began providing medical aid to Davila, who was shot several times, , according to police.
More than a dozen gunshots can be heard in video posted to social media by a witness.
“Today they came out here and protected,” Chief Noakes said about the officers involved in the shooting. “Today they came out here and made sure a violent criminal was not able to continue a violent crime spree and hurt any citizens here in the city of Fort Worth.”
Police asked the public to avoid the area due to street closures during the investigation.
The incident was one of three this week in which officers from Tarrant County were involved in the pursuit and shooting of an armed suspect, according to police.
On Wednesday, a man was killed when he was shot by a SWAT officer during a standoff with Bedford and Hurst police, authorities said. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as 45-year-old Joshua Keith Hughes, of Southlake. He died from multiple gunshot wounds.
On Friday morning, a police chase involving several North Texas police departments that began in Dalworthington Gardens, just outside of Arlington, ended when the suspect was shot multiple times after firing at officers in Midlothian, officials said. The suspect, who was wanted on a family violence warrant and whose name has not been released, died at a hospital, according to a news release from Dalworthington Gardens police.
