Family member arrested in Georgia is suspect in Fort Worth killing of JROTC instructor
Police say a suspect was arrested more than 900 miles away after a JROTC instructor was shot to death in front of his Fort Worth home on Friday afternoon.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 54-year-old Gene General Bass, who is listed as a JROTC teacher on the Crowley ISD website. He was also a JROTC Army instructor for Fort Worth ISD, according to Bass’ Facebook.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, is a family member of the victim and was arrested Saturday at a residence in Valdosta, Georgia, by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Worth police said.
At 2:25 p.m. Friday, officers were dispatched to the 4400 block of Chesapeake Bay Drive, in far southwest Fort Worth.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim in his front yard with gunshot wounds to his upper body, police said in a news release.
Medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Bass was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives determined the shooter drove up to the home, fired multiple shots at Bass and fled the scene in a vehicle, police said.
Homicide detectives are investigating the motive for the killing.
