A woman faces a murder charge after she fatally shot her ex-husband in a domestic-violence killing Friday night, Plano police said.

The victim has been identified as David Gene Nunley, 55.

The suspect has been identified as his ex-wife, Merridith Simone Nunley, 38.

David Nunley filed for a protective order against Merridith Nunley about two years ago, according to documents obtained by WFAA-TV. In the documents David Nunley wrote, “I am extremely concerned for my safety as well as my children’s safety.” He said that his ex-wife had mental health issues and she had in the past pointed a gun at him, bit him, hit him and damaged his car.

Officers were dispatched to the victim’s home in the 2300 block of Monticello Circle around 10:30 p.m. Friday regarding the shooting. They found David Nunley with a gunshot wound to the upper body, Plano police said in a news release. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later, police found his ex-wife and took her into custody.

David Nunley called 911 to report that he was shot, and Merridith Nunley also called friends to tell them she had shot her ex-husband, police said.

David Nunley had five children, including his three children with Merridith of whom he had custody, according to a GoFundMe account raising money to help the family.

“They have lost their beloved father, and will need all the love, care, support and money to help these children recover from this domestic tragedy that happened in their home,” David’s aunt Zandra Earle wrote on the GoFundMe page. “The children — the youngest age 5 to the oldest — will need lots of love and support for them to recover.”

None of the children were home at the time of the shooting, according to the family.

The Plano police Crimes Against Persons Unit is investigating the homicide, according to police.
