6 people, including 2 juveniles, injured in Arlington police pursuit of shooting suspect
Six people, including two teens, were injured after a shooting suspect fled from Arlington police Thursday night and his vehicle collided with two others, officials said.
Officers responded to a shots fired call in the 1900 block of Chalice Road around 6:10 p.m. Several witnesses reported seeing a group of teens fighting and believed one of them fired the shots, police said.
No one appears to have been hit by gunfire, according to police. Those involved in the fight had already dispersed, but officers were able to locate one of them. He confirmed that someone did have a handgun and fired a shot during the fight.
Officers obtained a good description of the suspect’s sport utility vehicle, a 2001 Infiniti QX4, and found it on Pioneer Parkway around 9:20 p.m. The SUV sped away from police when they tried to pull it over. The officers decided to chase the suspect “due to the violent nature of the original call,” police said.
The Infiniti’s driver fled westbound on Pioneer Parkway at a high rate of speed and ran a red light at the Cooper Street intersection, according to police. The SUV then collided with a Toyota Prius and a Toyota Highlander which were going through the intersection on green.
The driver of the Infiniti, identified by police as 32-year-old Roberto Rodriguez, tried to flee the scene on foot after the crash, officials said. He was apprehended and taken into custody.
Rodriguez was taken to a local hospital along with his passengers -- a teenage boy, a teenage girl and a 25-year-old woman, police said. The 18-year-old female driver of the Highlander and the 23-year-old female passenger of the Prius were also transported to the hospital. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, according to police.
Police said they recovered a gun inside the Infiniti and believe the teenage male passenger was connected with the shooting incident on Chalice Road. Authorities won’t release his identity because he is under 18 but said he will be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon once he’s been medically cleared.
Rodriguez will also be charged when he’s cleared by doctors, police said. He faces one count of evading causing serious bodily injury and one count of abandoning/endangering a child.
