One of three teens arrested in the fatal shooting of a junior from Paschal High School pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 35 years in prison, the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office announced in a social media post Friday.

Isaiah Nunez, 18, pleaded guilty in the death of 17-year-old Zechariah Trevino. He was also sentenced to 15 years for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury for shooting Trevino’s cousin.

Nunez, 18-year-old Daniel Reed, and a 16-year-old boy whose name police did not release because of his age were arrested on suspicion of murder on Jan 20, 2023.

At about 4 p.m. that day, five teens arrived in two sport utility vehicles at the Whataburger at 2401 W. Berry Street, across from the high school.

In an arrest warrant affidavit, police said that before shooting Trevino’s cousin, Reed got out from one of the vehicles wearing a balaclava that covered most of his face. He held a pistol in his right hand. Nunez joined him as they argued with Trevino and his cousin.

The 16-year-old who was also arrested was the driver of the vehicle that Reed and Nunez were in, according to police. Reed fired his pistol once, shooting the cousin in her torso, the warrant said. Nunez came from behind a vehicle, pulling a handgun from his waistband and shot at the cousin once and fired eight to 10 rounds at Trevino.

Nunez fired once more at the cousin while she was on the ground.

The suspects were not current students at Paschal, according to police.

The shooting was motivated by a conflict between Trevino’s cousin and a former group of friends who she believes were involved in the overdose death of her sister, according to the warrant.

Charges are still pending for Reed, according to court documents.
