The Fort Worth leader of a drug trafficking organization has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty in July to conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas.

Alonzo Smith, 29, was charged in May and sentenced Dec. 7.

Authorities said Smith and others, most of whom were heavily armed gang members, ran an operation with multiple drug houses in the Fort Worth area. The homes were used for the sole purpose of storing and distributing large quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin.

While serving a search warrant at one of the houses, police found 800 grams of meth, 188 grams of cocaine, 496 grams of black tar heroin and 300 grams of fentanyl.

“Violent gangs that flood our neighborhoods with illicit drugs are a true threat to public safety,“ Homeland Security Investigations Dallas Special Agent in Charge Lester R. Hayes Jr. said in the news release. “The lengthy sentence imposed on this defendant highlights our commitment to disrupting and dismantling these transnational criminal organizations seeking to exploit our communities for financial gain.”

The investigation leading to charges against Smith was conducted by Fort Worth police and Homeland Security Investigations.
