Man suspected in killings of baby and 3 adults fatally shot himself, Dallas police say
A couple and their 20-year-old daughter and 1-year-old grandson were killed and a 15-year-old girl was injured in a shooting Sunday in the Rylie neighborhood in southeast Dallas.
The man suspected in the quadruple homicide fatally shot himself after law enforcement authorities found and pursued him, police said.
Dallas police said they were called about 4 p.m. Sunday to the shooting scene at a home in the 9700 block of Royce Drive. When officers arrived they found the five victims, police said in a news release.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the four victims who died as Logan De La Cruz, 1; Vanessa De La Cruz, 20; Karina Lopez, 33; and Jose Lopez, 50.
The adults died at the scene, and the children were taken to a local hospital, where the baby died. The 15-year-old was treated and released. A 13-year-old girl was also inside the house at the time of the shooting but she was not injured.
Investigators identified the suspect in the shooting as 21-year-old Byron Carillo. He had a GPS tracker on his ankle because of a 2021 aggravated assault charge but cut off the ankle monitor at some point before or immediately after he shot the victims, police said.
Investigators have not described a motive for the shooting but court records show that in the previous assault case, Carrillo was accused of using a gun to threaten two of the victims he is now charged with killing — Vanessa De La Cruz, who was his ex-girlfriend, and her father, Jose Lopez.
Carrillo’s monitor was registered to the house next door to where the killings happened, according to KDFW-TV.
Carillo left the scene of the killings and later stole a vehicle and drove south on Interstate 35E, police said in a news release.
Highway Patrol troopers found the suspect in the Austin area, where Carillo led officers in a chase before crashing the vehicle in a ditch, Dallas police said. Carillo ran from the vehicle and when pursuing officers got close to him, he shot himself in the head and died at the scene, according to the release.
The in-custody death is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
A GoFundMe was organized by Annabel De La Cruz, a family member of the victims, to fund their funeral and memorial services.
“Suffering the tragic loss of our parents, my sister and nephew, we would greatly appreciate any help,” Annabel wrote on the GoFundMe page.
She said the money donated would also help her and her sisters Roxana, Teresa and Jocelyn.
As of a $20,000 goal, $7,489 had been raised as of Tuesday.
