A man accidentally shot himself in the leg overnight Tuesday in a possibly gang-related incident at a convenience store near downtown Fort Worth, police said.

Officers responded to a local hospital around 12:30 a.m. regarding a shooting victim, officials said. They learned the man had been part of a group of people at the OK Food Mart, located in the 1000 block of Bessie Street. Officers from the Gang Unit had the store under surveillance, police said, and they approached the group when it looked like they were about the fight.

The man discharged his gun and accidentally shot himself in the right leg, according to police. He then fled the scene and was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. The Gang Unit will help investigate the shooting, officials said.
