15-year-old killed in shooting at south Fort Worth apartment complex, police say
A 15-year-old was fatally shot at a south Fort Worth apartment complex Monday evening, police said.
Officers responded to the Arwen Apartments in the 2100 block of Tanna Lane around 6:30 p.m. regarding the shooting call. They found a teen with a gunshot wound to his upper body. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
No arrests have been announced. Neighbors heard gunshots and found the boy lying on the ground, police said.
Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
Authorities haven’t publicly released the name of the victim, but Maryta Smith told KXAS-TV he was her 15-year-old son, Xavier Hullaby.
Smith said someone knocked on the door of their apartment and when her son answered, he was shot. The mother was on her way home from a trip to Houston at the time. Her adult daughter and 6-year-old granddaughter were home with Xavier, she said.
“He was a brother, an uncle, he loved his nieces and nephews,” Smith told KXAS on Tuesday. “He was looking forward to go on a field day with his niece tomorrow, but she had to watch her uncle be taken away.”
Smith said she doesn’t know who killed her son. She asked for anyone with information to come forward.
“I’m hurting and I want answers,” the mother told the NBC station. “It’s senseless and I’m tired of it. I’m tired of it not just for my child, I’m tired of it for other children, too. They’re supposed to bury us — we aren’t supposed to be out here burying them.”
This is the second homicide this month in which a teen was killed. A 14-year-old was shot to death May 21 in a west Fort Worth apartment building breezeway.
Le’Drevion Winfield died in the May 21 shooting at the 2900 Broadmoor apartments, and another boy with him was wounded. The victims were approached by three assailants who left the scene before officers arrived, according to police.
