A man who was shot and killed by Irving police officers Friday night was a suspect wanted in a homicide that happened the previous night, police said in an update Monday.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Carlos Munguía, pointed a handgun at three officers before they shot him, an Irving Police Department spokesman said at a news conference.

Witnesses identified Munguía as the person who fatally shot Juan Carlos Piedra Ceballos, 37, outside an apartment in the 3300 block of Willow Creek Drive on Thursday, Officer Robert Reeves said. Witnesses told police that Munguía came out of his apartment and walked up to Ceballos’ car and started shooting without saying anything.

At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the Irving Police Department’s Fugitive Unit found Munguía off the south service road of Texas 183 and the 2800 block of Irving Boulevard leading to the north service road of Texas 356.

When officers tried to take him into custody, the man pointed the gun at them and they fired at him, police said.

The officers gave the man medical treatment until the Irving Fire Department arrived at the scene. He was then taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.

Police were asking people to avoid the area as all eastbound lanes of State Highway 183 were shut down near the scene.

Officers announced about two hours after the shooting that there was no continued threat to the public.
