Police are investigating a shooting that killed a man outside a Fort Worth Walmart after an apparent fight with a family member Wednesday night, officials said.

Officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Airport Freeway, in north Fort Worth, around 9:45 p.m. regarding a shooting, police said. They found a man with a gunshot wound who was already dead.

The victim was shot during a domestic situation with a family member, police said, and the suspect and another person fled the scene in a vehicle. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s website has identified the victim as 29-year-old DeAudwin Joe Hollie of Fort Worth.

Tina Liggins told the Star-Telegram that she was at Walmart with her husband and 10-year-old son when the shooting happened. They were there to buy gifts for her son, whose birthday was that day.

“We were starting to walk out and people were coming in telling about there’s gunshots and we were like, ‘What?’” she said. “And I mean you see people starting to run towards the entrance to the door, and everybody’s like, ‘Somebody’s shooting, somebody’s shooting.’”

Liggins said the shooting took place in the dark part of the parking lot between Walmart and McDonald’s. They could see a man lying motionless on the ground.

“I’m just trying to hurry and get my son in the car so we can get out of there,” she said.

Right before the shooting, Liggins and her family were inside the store checking out. She said a man came in talking loudly on his phone and telling his mother to “just get the license plate number.”

“We were walking out the exit door and that same guy came behind us,” Liggins said. “And he was like, ‘Mom, I don’t know where my brother is. What are you talking about? He was in the parking lot.’ And next thing you know, he’s like, ‘Well, what do you mean he’s been shot? ... Is he dead?’ And he took off running.”

The victim’s family told Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV that Hollie was the father of two children with a baby on the way.

Liggins said she and her family kept praying that the man was still alive as they left the parking lot.

“He’s just barely started living his life, you know,” she said. “It’s just horrible.”

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident, police said.

No arrests have been announced as of Saturday night.
