In Arlington race, man dies when car lands in creek at end of embankment, police say
A driver racing on Sunday on an Arlington highway died when he tried to pass a car on a shoulder, lost control, went down an embankment and landed in a creek, police said.
The man, who was inside an Infiniti sedan that was on its roof when it stopped, had appeared to be racing with the driver of an Audi and was attempting about 5:15 p.m. to pass the other car when the crash occurred, Arlington police said, attributing the account to witnesses. The car was partially submerged in water.
The man, whose name the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released, died at the scene near the westbound lanes of Interstate 30 near Fielder Road. He was 27.
A 22-year-old man who was a passenger was taken in critical condition to a hospital, police said.
The driver of the 2011 Audi A5, Vincent Ybarra, pulled over near the scene, police said. Ybarra, 23, was arrested on suspicion of racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury/death.
