Two women who were walking in east Arlington were struck late on Sunday by a sport utility vehicle driven by a drunken man, police said.

One of the women died. The motorist drove to his home without stopping at the scene at East Park Row Drive and Susan Drive, Arlington police said.

The women were hit about 10:15 p.m. Maricela Moreno, 67, was pronounced dead at a hospital of blunt force injuries, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The other victim, who is 49 years old, is expected to survive her injuries, police said.

The driver of the SUV was traveling west on East Park Row Drive, ran a red light, struck the women and continued to drive, police said, citing the accounts of witnesses. Speed and alcohol were factors in the collision, police said.

The women were using a designated crosswalk at the time, and the walk signal was illuminated, according to police.

Officers found a license plate at the scene that came from a vehicle registered to a nearby home, police said. When officers went to the address, they said that they saw a Mazda CX9 with heavy front-end damage parked in front.

Police said the driver of the CX9 was Jose Martinez and he was at the home.

Police arrested Martinez, 22, on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, accident involving death and accident involving serious bodily injury.

The arrest was based on police conversations with Martinez and the results of sobriety tests, police said.
