A man is in stable condition after being shot by police Thursday afternoon in Garland, according to a news release from police.

Matthew Waldrop, 43, was shot by police when they responded to a suspicious circumstance call in the 600 block of Echo Drive around 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the release. A female caller told police dispatch that her in-home monitoring system had been activated and nobody was supposed to be at the home.

When officers arrived they found out that Waldrop had a protective order issued to protect the caller and that he was not supposed to be at that location, according to police. As officers spoke with him, Waldrop became increasingly agitated and threatened to kill the officers.

Officers tried to deescalate the situation, but Waldrop pulled a handgun and shot multiple times at officers, according to police. Two officers returned fire and none of them were injured in the shooting. The officers began performing first aid to Waldrop until paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital. He is currently listed as being in stable condition.

Waldrop is facing two counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and one charge of violation of a protective order, according to Garland police. Garland detectives and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Public Integrity unit responded in accordance with standard procedure for officer shootings.

The two officers will be placed on administrative leave per department policy, according to police.

The shooting is under investigation.
