Southlake police shoot, kill armed homicide suspect in traffic stop at shopping plaza
When a man got out of a car he was driving and pointed a gun at them, four Southlake police officers on Monday fired upon the driver, who was a suspect in a killing earlier in the day in North Richland Hills, authorities said. The driver died after being taken to a hospital, police said.
The 28-year-old man was shot at the entrance to a shopping center parking lot along the eastbound Texas 114 service road near Carroll Avenue.
The man’s name has not been released. Officers administered first aid until paramedics arrived to take him to the hospital, police said.
Southlake Police Chief James Brandon said that the shooting occurred after police tracked the suspect to the city around 3:45 p.m. and tried to stop his car.
North Richland Hills police said they began looking for the driver after a 26-year-old man was shot to death about 12:30 pm in a parking lot in the 1600 block of Weyland Drive. The homicide victim’s name has not been released.
Witnesses told North Richland Hills police that a gray or silver four-door sedan left the area following the shooting.
“Criminal Investigations began working several leads and developed enough evidence to ID a person of interest,” North Richland Hills police wrote in a press release. “Detectives then started communicating with the Southlake Police Department, relaying information on the 28-year-old individual.”
“North Richland Hills Criminal Investigations continues to work directly with the investigators from the Southlake Police Department to gather any evidence that may be related to the homicide investigation,” the department’s statement said.
The Texas Rangers have been asked to investigate the police shooting, Brandon said. The employees involved —who are a captain, a sergeant, a corporal and an officer with between eight and 31 years of experience — have been placed on administrative leave, which is department procedure, the chief said.
No officers were injured.
A heavy police presence continued at the Carroll Pointe shopping plaza shooting scene Monday evening. The suspect’s handgun was recovered, police said.
Based on the view from its helicopter, KXAS-TV reported that a large amount of blood could be seen on the pavement near the plaza.
