Man arrested after opening fire at Arlington police officers at apartment complex Tuesday
Police arrested a man after he fired on officers who were responding to a call about shots fired at an apartment complex in southeast Arlington on Tuesday night, according to police.
Officers arrived at the scene around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday after receiving multiple reports that a man was carrying a rifle around the Trinity Trace Apartments, in the 1700 block of Trinity Height Drive, and firing shots, police said in a news release. When they arrived, police said, the officers began searching the area and saw the suspect get on top of a truck and begin firing at them.
Police later identified the suspect as Christopher Gibbs, 27.
The officers moved immediately to find cover but did not return fire, according to the release. After firing multiple rounds, Gibbs tried to flee the area but was spotted at the intersection of Allen Avenue and Arbrook Avenue by another officer arriving on scene, police said.
That officer gave Gibbs orders to drop the weapon, to which he complied, and took him into custody, according to police. When he began speaking to officers, police said it became clear Gibbs was having a mental health crisis and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
Gibbs was cleared by medical staff and then transported to the Arlington City Jail, according to police. He faces three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of deadly conduct.
There were no injuries, but police said that some of the shots fired during the incident hit an Uber Eats driver’s car, shattering a window.
Officers did not return fire at any point.
