Suspected drunken driver arrested in death of 21-year-old man in Fort Worth car crash
A 39-year-old Fort Worth driver was arrested Thursday in connection with an Aug. 28 wreck that left a 21-year-old man dead, according to jail records.
Darron Phillips was booked into the Fort Worth Jail and faces a charge of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle, records show.
Killed in the crash was Kevin Martinez, who died at a hospital at 1:11 p.m. on Aug. 28, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office website. He died from multiple blunt force injuries.
Martinez’s sister told the Star-Telegram that a previous accident was blocking the road and Martinez had stopped his vehicle and was waiting to turn to detour around the scene of that crash. Another car driven by Phillips then hit Martinez’s vehicle.
The accident was reported about 2 a.m. in the 3700 block of Stalcup Road.
The previous accident, reported about two hours earlier, was also fatal and resulted in the arrest of another driver on an intoxication manslaughter charge, according to police and court records.
In the first crash, shortly before midnight, a driver was traveling northbound in the 3700 block of Stalcup at a high rate of speed, according to the preliminary and follow-up investigation. That driver was identified as Willie Washington, 25, of Fort Worth, according to a police report.
Washington hit a dip in the road and his car became airborne and struck a tree, police said.
A passenger in Washington’s vehicle, Daniel Terrell, 26, was pronounced dead. Others in Washington’s car were transported to local hospitals, police said.
Washington was arrested that night and is charged with intoxication manslaughter.
