A 911 call about a man with a gun at a north Fort Worth church turned out to be inaccurate after investigators discovered the man was actually holding a cross, according to police.

Police responded to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church at 4100 Blue Mound Road around 6:20 p.m. Friday after callers reported a man came into the church with a gun, according to a police incident detail report. The police incident detail report, which provide preliminary information from 911 callers to responding officers, said the caller told a dispatcher that everyone was lying on the ground at one point.

Police said in an update around 7:40 p.m. Friday that the man was not carrying a firearm, but rather, a cross. They said the man was being transported to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the individual did not have a weapon and was holding a cross in his hand,” a police spokesman said in the update.

Police responded to the call with patrol officers and the department’s direct response unit.
