A 50-year-old man who was being held at the Tarrant County Jail died on Friday after undergoing surgery for a pre-existing condition, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Richard Marta was under the care of JPS medical staff at the time of his death, but because he was at the jail prior to his surgery, it will be treated as an in-custody death.

That means Marta’s death will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office and Texas Commission on Jail Standards. The Sheriff’s Office must also send a report to the state’s attorney general within 30 days.

If Marta was known to have mental health issues, the Mental Health Authority will also review the case.

The Sheriff’s Office said that the hospital’s medical staff will do a “full round table peer review” of Marta’s condition and the medical action taken in his care.

The cause of death had not been released by the medical examiner as of Monday afternoon.
