Man in critical condition after being shot by Fort Worth officers on domestic call: police

A man was in critical condition late Wednesday night after being fired upon by Fort Worth police officers who had responded to a domestic disturbance call on the city’s west side, officials said.

Fort Worth police Sgt. Amy Heise, a spokeswoman for the department, said officers responded about 8:30 p.m. to the 3200 block of Olive Place after reports that a man was using a shotgun to try to take children from the home.

The man left before police arrived, but officers had reason to believe he was coming back, Heise said. In a proactive move, officers blocked off the north and south ends of that block of Olive Place, an area just north of Camp Bowie Boulevard.

The man did return, Heise said, and tried to get around the police roadblock. He crashed into police vehicles and “presented our officers with a deadly force situation where they fired on his vehicle,” she said.

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition following the shooting. Police recovered a shotgun from the vehicle, according to Heise.

Police did not say whether the man fired any shots, and did not take questions at Wednesday night’s press conference.

Heise said the information she released Wednesday was preliminary as the investigation continues.

“The Fort Worth Police Department would like to remind everybody that domestic violence situations are incredibly dangerous, not only for the civilians that go through them but also for the police officers who have to respond to them, and unfortunately that’s what happened here today,” she said.

Police said their major case unit is conducting the investigation.

Irving police also announced a shooting Wednesday night in which they said officers shot and killed an armed emergency room patient who fired at police at Baylor Scott & White hospital.
