Woman dies in shooting over child custody dispute at Richardson Starbucks; suspect arrested
A 52-year-old grandmother died after a confrontation at a Richardson Starbucks escalated into a shooting Monday evening, police said.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. at a Starbucks Coffee location at 4151 E. Renner Road in Richardson. Police said they were dispatched to the area after receiving 911 calls about shots fired.
Investigators said 23-year-old Tranisa Octavin Trana Watts pulled out a handgun and fired multiple times after a “disturbance” with the 52-year-old victim, Kentoria Nicole Edwards.
“Edwards is the grandmother of Watts’ child and had full custody. Watts requested to see her child and Edwards agreed they could meet at the location,” police said. “During the visit, Watts pulled out a handgun and shot Edwards and attempted to leave with the child.”
Watts tried to leave the Starbucks with the child but was apprehended by responding police officers, the police department said.
Other responding officers tried to preform life-saving measures on Edwards, prior to EMS arrival. When paramedics arrived, they took the 52-year-old to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
No one else, including the child, was injured in the shooting. Watts is now facing a capital murder charge.
