Police SWAT officers shot man dead in Hurst as he fired gun at them, authorities say

As a man in Hurst fired a gun on SWAT officers outside of his house on Tuesday, they returned fire and shot him dead, Hurst police said.

The violent end to a standoff came after about six hours of attempted negotiation at the house in the 600 block of Willow Street. No one beyond the suspect was injured.

The encounter between the suspect and officers began about 2 a.m. when Hurst police responded to a shots-fired and welfare concern call at his house.

After officers contacted him by telephone, the man fired shots toward them, Hurst police said. The officers established a perimeter and asked colleagues on a regional SWAT team to help.

The man, whose name and age authorities did not release, fired dozens of rounds inside and outside of the house, police said.

SWAT officers tried to negotiate with the suspect, and Hurst police detectives obtained search and arrest warrants.

Later in the morning, the SWAT team released tear gas, breached the house and resumed attempts to negotiate. The man continued to fire and refused to surrender, police said.

The man left the side of the house about 8:30 a.m. He fired a gun at officers, and more than one returned fire, police said.

The man fell to the ground. Hurst Fire Department paramedics who had been waiting near the house pronounced him dead.

The Texas Rangers are leading an investigation of the death.
