One person killed in shooting at shopping center near Parks Mall in Arlington
A 29-year-old man died when he was shot at the Arlington Town Center parking lot in the 4100 block of South Cooper Street about 3 p.m. Saturday, Arlington police said.
Another man, 31, was shot there and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
A police spokesman said investigators are trying to determine what led to the shooting. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the victim’s name after next-of-kin has been notified.
Police said they have detained multiple people and do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public. They do not believe the shooting was random, based on their investigation, but a police spokesman did not elaborate on what led investigators to that conclusion.
Phyllis Owens, an Arlington resident, said she and her husband didn’t see the shooting but saw what led up to it. Owens told the Star-Telegram in a Facebook message that she and her husband were in their vehicle heading south on South Cooper Street when she heard shouting.
She said she saw someone walking toward two men in the parking lot and yelling for them to get on the ground.
Owens said in the message that one of the men in the parking lot got down and she heard the other tell the man approaching that he “didn’t rob it.”
A fourth man walked toward the commotion and tried to calm everybody down, she said, and then the light turned green and she and her husband drove away. When they drove back by the area shortly after they saw police cars and crime scene tape in the parking lot.
