Irving man arrested, faces murder charge in death of his 81-year-old mother, police say
Police found Christoper Coggins first.
He was hiding in the attic of a house in Irving, they said, with blood splattered on his tennis shoes.
Officers were there on Tuesday to check on his 81-year-old mother. They were called to the house in the 600 block of Brookstone Drive by a person who had not been able to reach her.
They found Laverne Coggins’ body inside a zippered bag in the garage.
Also in the house, police wrote in an arrest warrant affidavit, was a bloody knife in plain view.
Coggins, 52, was arrested on suspicion of murder in his mother’s death, Irving police said on Thursday.
Coggins has a history of violence toward his mother, police said. He was charged in June with unlawful restraint and injury to an elderly person and was released on probation from the Dallas County Jail four days before the killing.
Due to several unusual circumstances, officers and firefighters forced their way into the residence on Tuesday, police said.
