Police arrest suspect in Arlington store robbery possibly connected to stabbing death
Police on Friday arrested in a southeast Arlington convenience store robbery an 18-year-old suspect who they said may be the assailant in a killing in the city two days after a clerk was slashed and beaten.
After Arlington police took Osagie Ayanru into custody, they said they found in a trash bag in his residence keys to a car that detectives believe Ayanru stole from outside the same store Wednesday night before the car struck a woman who was walking a dog.
Between the car theft and the pedestrian crash, police believe that, in another robbery, Ayanru likely stabbed to death a man walking with his wife.
Ayanru on Monday stabbed with a kitchen knife a clerk at a 7-Eleven in the 1900 block of East Sublett Road after the woman gave Ayanru about $200, the register cash he demanded, police alleged. Ayanru kicked the clerk in her head as she was on the ground, police alleged.
Ayanru was arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery and motor vehicle theft. Detectives interviewed him Friday, and he did not offer an admission to a crime, police said.
DNA testing on evidence in the homicide is planned, police said.
A Seguin High School faculty member who watched surveillance video of the 7-Eleven robbery told police the suspect possibly was Ayanru, and shown a photo array, the 7-Eleven clerk picked Ayanru as the person who assaulted her, police said.
Islam Duly, 44, died Wednesday night after he was stabbed and robbed as he walked with his wife near their home, police said. The killing occurred about 9 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Collins Street.
Duly’s wife, who also was stabbed, was treated for serious injuries and released Thursday morning from a hospital, police said.
The 20-year-old woman hit by the car was injured and her dog was killed, police said. Surveillance video shows the car stopped and a passenger got out. The woman overheard someone yelling from the car to grab her wallet, but she did not have a wallet or other belongings with her, police said.
