Teen thwarts kidnapping near Denton highway by spraying suspect with Mace, police say

A woman thwarted a kidnapping Sunday evening near Interstate 35E when she sprayed Mace in the face of a suspect, Denton police said Tuesday.

The woman had been walking next to a frontage road when a man got out of a van, picked her up and began carrying her back to the vehicle.

But the suspect dropped her when she sprayed him, Denton police said.

No suspects were in custody Tuesday, and Denton police were continuing their investigation.

The attempted kidnapping occurred shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of I-35E near a frontage road.

The 19-year-old woman told Denton police she saw a white van possibly following her when she changed directions.

The van continued following her and stopped next to her, Denton police said.

A man exited the passenger side of the vehicle, grabbed her around the waist and lifted her up.

The suspect returned to the van when she sprayed him, and the vehicle drove away from the scene, Denton police said.

Anyone with information on the case should call Denton police at 940-349-8181.
