Irving officer shoots, kills man armed with shotgun outside of 7-Eleven, police say
An Irving police officer early Thursday shot to death a 69-year-old man who used a shotgun to blast the glass doors of a closed 7-Eleven and get inside, the city’s police department said.
Joseph Zahaczewski died at the convenience store in the 500 block of North Nursery Road, said Officer Robert Reeves, a police spokesman.
As officers arrived at the store about 1:15 a.m., Zahaczewski was walking out of it. One officer told Zahaczewski to drop the shotgun, and the officer shot him when he did not, Reeves said.
The police department did not release the officer’s name. He has been employed by the department for three years, according to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV.
Neither officers nor a store employee who hid inside a bathroom were injured, Reeves said.
Zahaczewski lived in Irving.
An investigation of the shooting was incomplete.
