North Texas man posed as officer, assaulted construction worker, police say

A Denton man who authorities say impersonated a police officer and assaulted a construction worker was in custody Tuesday in a Denton Jail.

The 32-year-old man is accused of brandishing a badge and gun at the worker, telling the victim he could go wherever he wanted.

Denton police identified the suspect as Timothy Winfree, who remained in the Denton Jail on Tuesday.

Denton police arrested Winfree on Monday afternoon.

Denton patrol officers were dispatched shortly before 12:15 p.m. Monday to an assault call on Fort Worth Drive in Denton.

A construction worker who had been working to close parts of the southbound lane of Fort Worth Drive told police that a truck pulled up. The driver got out and stated he was a Denton police officer.

After the alleged assault, the suspect drove away.

Denton police tracked down the suspect’s vehicle based on the description given to authorities by a caller, and later arrested him.

Denton police determined that Winfree is a family member of a Denton reserve law enforcement officer and used the officer’s badge.
