Panic, alarm as Arlington junior high student sets off fireworks in hall, police say

An Arlington junior high school student on Thursday set off fireworks in a hallway in the building and caused panic and alarm, police said.

Someone at Carter Junior High believed the fireworks sound was gunshots, and the school was placed on lockdown about 12:30 p.m., police said.

After a police search of the school, in the 700 block of Tharp Street, the lockdown was lifted and classes resumed. No one was injured, police said.

A police spokesman said the department had not identified the student who lit the fireworks Thursday afternoon.

“This has now shifted to a criminal investigation,” police spokesman Tim Ciesco said in an email. “Once we identify the student, they will face appropriate charges.”

Arlington Independent School District informed parents of the incident through voicemail messages and social media.

A similar fireworks prank at Duncanville High School frightened students and parents on Tuesday, according to KXAS. In that case, school district officials told NBC 5 that the students involved were identified and will be disciplined.
