Former Fort Worth-area firefighter sentenced to probation for baby’s death in crash

A former White Settlement firefighter with no previous criminal history was sentenced to 10 years’ probation on Wednesday in the 2018 traffic death of a baby on a Fort Worth highway.

In an emotional hearing, Alexander See, 29, was sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to a charge of intoxication manslaughter.

In addition to probation, he also was sentenced to 120 days in jail and was taken into custody Wednesday.

A Tarrant County jury reached their decision on the sentence Wednesday in Criminal District Court No. 432.

“As we argued to the jury, a fire responder who has spent his career pulling people out of DWI wrecks should be acutely aware of the devastation that can be caused by driving on our streets while intoxicated,” said prosecutor Kacey Fickes in a Thursday email. “We are grateful to the Fort Worth police and crime scene officers and first responders. The trauma they suffered from working this terrible crash scene was evidence of this senseless, selfish act that should never have happened.”

See was driving a pickup truck on April 27, 2018 when he rear-ended a car that had slowed for traffic on Interstate 30, killing 6-month-old Reema Ghanim.

Reema was in a booster seat at the time of the accident. There were two adults and three children in the car at the time of the crash, and they were all injured.

See, whose blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit, crashed into the Ghanims car at full speed, according to a spokeswoman with the Tarrant County criminal district attorney’s office..

At the time of the accident, See had been a firefighter in White Settlement, but he was on leave while he was in paramedic school. He was working for CareFlite.

See left the department shortly after his arrest, said White Settlement City Manager Jeff James on Thursday.

He also had previously worked as an EMT at MedStar from July 2014 until September 2015, according to MedStar officials.
