Man suspected of killing Houston-area police officer arrested after Blue Alert
The man at the center of a Blue Alert who went on the run after being accused of killing a Houston-area police officer was arrested Thursday, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Tavores Dewayne Henderson, 21, was wanted on a murder charge in connection with the death of Nassau Bay Police Department Sgt. Kaila Sullivan, 43. Police said she and another officer were in the process of arresting Henderson on an active warrant for domestic violence, putting him into handcuffs, when he broke free and climbed into his Jeep, according to Houston’s KHOU 11. He reportedly struck and killed Sullivan as he was fleeing the scene.
Police said they believed he still had one handcuff attached to his wrist, according to the Associated Press.
A warrant for murder was issued for Henderson and a Blue Alert went out across the state. Additionally, Crime Stoppers of Houston offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
Henderson was located on Thursday at a home in the 4200 block of Heritage Trail in Houston, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said on Twitter. He was taken into custody without incident.
Law enforcement officials told KHOU 11 a Crime Stoppers tip led them to Henderson, the station reported. Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies reportedly used a bullhorn to tell him to come out peacefully.
KHOU 11 reported that records indicate Henderson has faced multiple charges of assault on a family member.
Sullivan, who worked on the night shift, was approaching her 16-year anniversary with the Nassau Bay Police Department and was “a consummate professional in police work,” Police Chief Tim Cromie told the AP. Nassau Bay is roughly 25 miles southeast of Houston and has about 4,000 residents.
