The history of sexual harassment in America: five things to know
An Uber driver who climbed into the backseat of his car and rubbed his genitals on a passenger was given probation this week after a jury found him guilty of unlawful restraint.
Gilbert Osoro picked up a 19-year-old woman on May 19, 2017, at 2:30 a.m. The woman was leaving her boyfriend’s house and heading home, according to a news release from the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.
Osoro became flirty with the woman, who testified during his trial.
She said she was frightened but didn’t want to be rude, so she used her cellphone to start a Snapchat text with her boyfriend to tell him what was happening.
As the car approached her home in Haltom City, Osoro told her he wanted to turn the car around first and pulled into the driveway of a vacant house next door, according to the release. Then, he turned off the car’s lights, stopped the engine and climbed into the backseat.
He started to kiss and touch the woman, prosecutors said.
The woman’s boyfriend, still connected by phone, traced her location through the phone’s GPS and contacted police. At the same time, a neighbor noticed the unknown car parked at the vacant house and also called 911.
When Haltom City police officers arrived, they caught Osoro rubbing his genitals on the woman.
Osoro, who also testified during his trial, said it was “not uncommon” for him to get into the backseat of his car with Uber passengers.
Judge Deborah Nekhom sentenced Osoro to 14 months’ probation for unlawful restraint.
