Mesquite man left girlfriend’s 3-year-old with fatal internal injuries, police say

A man was arrested Friday and is facing a capital murder charge in connection with the death of a 3-year-old.

Bond for Warren L. Cooney, 26, of Mesquite, has been set at $150,000, according to a news release from the Mesquite Police Department.

Mesquite police and firefighters responded to a 911 call about 7:20 p.m. Thursday in the 1500 block of Sandalwood Drive in Mesquite and located the 3-year-old who was unresponsive, according to police.

The child was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead later on Friday, the release said.

An autopsy revealed that the child suffered from numerous internal injuries, the release said.
