Man shot by officer outside Fort Worth club
A man was shot by an officer early Wednesday when he pointed a weapon at a crowd outside a club in north Fort Worth, police said.
The man, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital by private vehicle and was in fair condition, police said.
Authorities identified the officer as J.B. Caffey, who was not injured.
The shooting occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday outside Bucks Cabaret in the 2300 block of Meacham Boulevard.
Patrolling officers saw a disturbance in the parking lot and ordered the crowd to disperse. The officers exited their patrol car when they heard a single gunshot and moved toward the crowd.
One officer fired twice at a man who was pointing a handgun at the crowd, police said. The man was standing next to a truck.
“Believing this subject presented a threat of lethal harm to everyone in the area, he fired his service weapon,” police Sgt. Steven Enright said in a news release. “The male fell to the ground at which time another individual jumped from the truck, pulled the man inside. The truck then sped away.”
No-one else was injured.
A broadcast was issued to officers about the shooting with a description of the vehicle, and the truck was found shortly after at a hospital, police said in a news release.
Caffey who has been on the force since 2007 is assigned to the north division patrol unit.
He was placed on routine administrative leave, police said. One of the first officers on the scene was wearing a body camera, police said.
Several patrons saw the shooting but fled.
Detectives are asking those witnesses or anyone else who has information about the shooting to call police at 817-335-4222.
