UT Arlington student says gun threat didn’t happen

A student who told police that she was threatened by a gunman now says the incident never happened, authorities said Friday.

The woman told police that a man followed her into a parking lot at the University of Texas at Arlington about 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, uttered a threat and pointed a gun at her, according to a police bulletin.

The woman later told police that she was not on campus Wednesday. UT Arlington police initiated an investigation after a third party notified them of a social media post with a detailed description of the alleged confrontation, a UTA news release said.

Police increased patrols in the area and conducted an investigation which included Arlington and Denton police officers and then found out in interviews today that the incident did not occur, the release said.

President Vistasp M. Karbhari said the university takes these issues very seriously.

“UT Arlington police work to ensure a safe campus, one founded on mutual support and respect,” Karbhari said in the release. “We will take decisive and appropriate action to ensure the well-being of our entire University community.”
