Kaufman police beg for people to stop leaving kids in hot cars

AP

Police posted an emotional plea on Facebook after recovering a nine-month-old baby in a hot car Friday afternoon.

The post exclaimed, “WE HAVE GOT TO STOP FORGETTING CHILDREN ARE IN THE BACK SEAT!”

The police responded to a call around 11:25 a.m. stating that a baby had been left inside a vehicle for almost an hour.

The officer did not name himself in the post, but CBS 11 interviewed Capt. Ed Black who said he was the first on scene, as does the officer in the post. He said the baby was hot to touch and that the baby’s skin burned his hand.

He was prepared to start CPR, but in that moment the child opened his eyes. The officer knows this time they were lucky but wanted to spread a message to people, begging them to stop forgetting kids in the car.

Investigators told CBS 11 that the boy’s grandmother parked her car and went inside her home at the 900 block of Melody Circle. It was almost an hour before she realized she had forgotten the boy in the car.

The temperature outside was already 90 degrees by 10 a.m. Friday and by 1 p.m., it was 98 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Jennifer Null, a research meteorologist at San Jose State University, told the Associated Press last month that a parked car on a 90-degree day would reach 119 degrees in 20 minutes and 133 degrees after an hour.

“Make yourself a sign and put it on the dash. Put your purse or wallet or cellphone in the backseat with the child,” the officer wrote. “Whatever you do, you MUST make it a habit to do it every time you get in the car.”

The child was taken to a Dallas hospital, and CBS 11 reported that he was released and doing better.

The grandmother is not facing charges yet, but the investigation is still ongoing.
