A highway revamp that could reduce drivers’ travel time to the DFW airport may be completed ahead of schedule.

The more than $400 million project along the Northeast Loop 820/Airport Freeway corridor will add a general purpose lane going each direction on Northeast Loop 820 stretching from Riverside Drive to Boulevard 26, according to a presentation from TEXpress. It also adds a toll lane going each way along Texas 121/183, spanning Bedford Euless Road to Industrial Boulevard.

The project’s official completion date is early 2027, but Pablo Ferrando, the CEO at LBJ, NTE and NTE-35W Express Lanes, is hopeful it could be done this year before Thanksgiving, he said in a Friday interview with the Star-Telegram.

“What we see out there is that the construction company is accelerating, and we do believe that they are going to finish this year,” he said.

Ferrando cautioned that the early completion time isn’t a guarantee.

“It all depends on the weather and availability of different vendors,” he said.

Construction on the project began in 2023. It is paid for using toll fare from drivers, said spokesperson Robert Hinkle.
