Three off-duty Dallas police officers were seriously injured when a small plane crashed in North Texas early Saturday, the police department said.

The Texas Highway Patrol responded about 12:20 a.m. to a single-engine plane crash in a field on the southwest corner of Helms Trail and Akron Way in the city limits of Forney, in Kaufman County, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The three officers, whose names have not been released, were taken to hospitals. One officer was released Saturday morning, one is listed in stable condition and one remains in critical condition, police said.

One officer was the pilot of the plane and the other two were passengers, according to Texas DPS.

The Forney Police Department, DPS and the FAA are investigating the crash.
