Weatherford ISD community gives warm welcome to new superintendent

The Weatherford ISD Board approved Dr. Sean Scott as the new superintendent of the district March 30.

A packed room of Weatherford ISD community members and educators welcomed the district’s new superintendent at a school board meeting Monday.

Applause rang out after the Weatherford ISD School board voted unanimously in favor of naming Dr. Sean Scott as the new superintendent of the district Monday evening. Scott, who previously served as deputy superintendent of Mansfield ISD, was named the lone finalist for the job in March after the board received over 40 strong applications, according to Mike Guest, school board president.

Guest said in a speech that Scott will follow an impressive legacy after the retirement of the previous superintendent, Dr. Beau Rees. Guest told the Star-Telegram that Rees was someone who “just never quit” and “had that constant push and drive to just do the best” he could.

Still, when it comes to filling “big shoes,” Guest said he and the board believe Scott is “that guy.”

Scott started his speech by acknowledging the expectation he has to continue Rees’ acclaimed reputation. Scott said he aims to work with the community to “make sure all our kids walk off that stage college, career, life-ready.”

“That is to me the moral imperative of any school district,” he said.

Scott, in response to questions from the Star-Telegram, said in an email that after speaking with the board and Rees, he learned facility and maintenance issues are concerns the school district needs to address.

“This is not unique to Weatherford, but our solution will have to be tailored to the Weatherford community,” Scott said. “A needs assessment has been completed. Now we will have to go to work, matching priorities to resources. We must continue to demonstrate to the community that we are making good use of the resources they have entrusted us with. “

Voters in Parker County rejected two school district bond proposals last November — one of which would have been used to upgrade facilities, the Weatherford Democrat reported.

Scott will enter his role at Weatherford ISD following an extensive career in public education, with over 14 years in leadership positions at Mansfield ISD behind him. Scott served in principal roles at Burleson ISD prior to his tenure at Mansfield, according to his Linkedln. Scott said /e/ comes from a long line of educators and “feels blessed” to continue living out his calling. He added that he is thrilled to bring his wife, Courtney, and three children, Jack, Abigail and Emma, into the Weatherford ISD community as well.

The school board also voted to name Scott Curran the next athletic director for the district. The prior athletic director, Aubrey Sims, left the district to take a position with Alvarado ISD. The school district previously combined the role of athletic director and football coach, but the district is now separating the roles, a spokesperson said.
