U-Haul driver arrested after police chase in Northeast Tarrant County Sunday
A U-Haul driver who dragged one officer and tried to strike another in Hurst before fleeing was arrested after a police chase Sunday afternoon, Hurst police said.
Hurst police officers responded about 11: 30 a.m. near the 700 block of Texas 26 after reports of a U-Haul truck being driven erratically, police said in a news release.
The driver, Justin Vance Carter, had reportedly exited the truck and was yelling at unknown people, police said.
Officers arrived and spoke with Carter, who had active arrest warrants for unrelated charges, police said.
When officers attempted to detain Carter, police said he fled the scene in the U-Haul, “briefly dragging one officer before they were able to be pulled away by a second officer.”
According to police, Carter then circled around and drove directly at another Hurst officer. The officer got behind a barrier to avoid being struck, and the truck fled the scene.
Hurst officers pursued the truck at low speeds for approximately an hour through multiple cities in Northeast Tarrant County, police said.
North Richland Hills, Haltom City, and Watauga police Departments assisted in the pursuit until Carter was taken into custody by Hurst officers shortly after 12 p.m., police said.
Carter faces charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer, evading in a vehicle, resisting arrest, and possession of a controlled substance, according to the release.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
