A student at Everman High School was arrested after allegedly bringing a gun onto campus Wednesday, police said.
The school was placed on lockdown after a student reported about 2 p.m. to campus police that they believed another student had a gun, the Everman Police Department said in a news release.
Everman police found the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident. A handgun was recovered, police said. Criminal charges are expected.
Police said information circulating on social media suggesting a gun was displayed during or after a fight on campus was false.
“There is no evidence indicating the weapon was displayed or used during any altercation,” according to police. “The fight that occurred on the campus was an entirely separate incident and unrelated.
“While incidents of this nature are understandably unsettling for students, parents, and the community, we want to reassure the public that the safety and security of our schools remains our highest priority,” police said in the release. “We are proud of the swift actions taken by the student who reported the concern, as well as the immediate response by our school resource officers and campus administrators. Their quick coordination and decisive action allowed the situation to be resolved safely and efficiently.”
Police said they encourage students and community members to report suspicious or concerning behavior to school staff or law enforcement.
