Tarrant County child dies from flu in first local pediatric death of flu season
A Tarrant County child has died from the flu in the first local pediatric flu death of the season, Tarrant County Public Health announced Wednesday.
The child had underlying medical conditions. No additional details about the child were released.
As of Feb. 28, there have been 90 influenza-associated deaths in children across the U.S. this season, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 85% of those deaths occurred in children who were not fully vaccinated against the flu, according to CDC data.
The CDC has classified this flu season as one of moderate severity. The CDC estimates that there have been at least 26 million illnesses, 340,000 hospitalizations, and 21,000 deaths from flu this season.
Tarrant County Public Health said in a statement Wednesday that flu activity remains widespread across the county. TCPH recommended flu vaccines to those six months of age and older, and encouraged caregivers and close contacts of those younger than six months to get vaccinated.
